Staff (as of 2022)
The department currently employs 36 professors and 230 research assistants. Of these, 180 are doctoral students who are financed by third-party funds, i.e. from research projects in connection with sponsors outside the university. Our department also has about 70 administrative and technical staff as well as about 230 student assistants.
Students
In the winter semester 2022/23, approx. 125 students began the Bachelor of Physics programme at the Technical University of Darmstadt, plus 15 students in the teaching profession. A total of approximately 1,050 students are enrolled in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes of the Department of Physics. In addition, there are about 80 trainee teachers.
Offices and research facilities
The Department of Physics is located on the City Centre Campus in the northern building section (S2) and is currently housed in 12 buildings with a total of approx 13,000 m2 of usable space. This includes:
- Office space approx. 5,.200 m2
- Lab rooms, incl. the linear accelerator S-DALINAC and technical area 4,000 m2
- Rooms for lab courses 1,400 m2
- Computer and self-study rooms for students 600 m2
- Seminar rooms 400 m2
- Workshops approx. 950 m2
