The physicist is one of the leading pioneers in laser fusion research, according to the publication. He combines scientific excellence with entrepreneurial expertise and, with his start-up Focused Energy, is driving forward the development of energy generation from laser fusion – a key technology promoted by the German government in its high-tech agenda.

Under Roth's leadership, the company collaborates internationally with research institutions such as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The professor of physics stands ‘for the successful combination of cutting-edge research and entrepreneurship’.

Under the motto ‘Top of the Table 2025’, Research.Table (opens in new tab) (paywall) selected the 100 most influential minds in the scientific community in ten categories ranging from politics, business, consulting, associations and think tanks to foundations, science, NGOs and society. Roth (opens in new tab), who conducts research in laser and plasma physics at the Department of Physics at TU Darmstadt, was honoured in the business category.
