Master Program

Master Program

In the Master's program you continue your studies in a liberal way. You will choose courses according the specialization branch in which you like to perform your research. The research branches currently offered are given in the following list:

• Accelerator Physics

• Condensed Matter Physics

• Matter at high energies

• Nuclear and Astro Physics

• Modern Optics

• your own program (must be approved by the study committee)

In every semester numerous seminars are offered covering a broad variety of topics. At the sessions each week a student typically gives a 40 minute talk and answers questions in the upcoming discussion. Giving talks might be more frightening than it eventually is, but certainly it is a good exercise in scientific public speech! And if you do not want to practice your German, probably the professors allow English.

Take a look at the Vorlesungsverzeichnis (course catalogue) some weeks before the start of the semester and make your choice. For some seminars though, it might be advisable to have a look at the professor’s bulletin board to pick a specific talk before the first meeting.

You can also attend seminars as a listener without giving a presentation by yourself, though without gaining credit points.

Vertiefende Vorlesung

Fitting to your Studienschwerpunkt (specialization) there are advanced courses in experimental and theoretical physics. Two of these are examined in a combined oral exam of 60 minutes. However, if you need some other test, approach the professors and ask for a less extensive/different exam. Most likely they will agree to find a solution.

Higher Theoretical Physics

You can choose between two lectures here. One is Higher Quantum Mechanics which deals with second quantization, Feynman integrals and such.

The second is Complex Dynamic Systems and covers everything from Bifurcations and Chaos to Critical Exponents and Scale Invariance.

„The little Three“

To gain further knowledge in your special field of choice, our department offers many courses where professors teach about something closely related to their field. You can also use this opportunity to receive a broad education in physics.

There is a broad range of topics to choose from.
